David has decades of experience teaching private lessons to hundreds of guitar players. He teaches advanced and professional level guitarists through private instruction programs at Berklee College of Music, Dartmouth College, and University of New Hampshire.

You will learn: how to fully understand the guitar fretboard, to apply advanced musical concepts to your playing, to create just the right accompaniments for any tune.

You will also learn a time-tested approach to developing excellent technique, methods gleaned from many years of performance experiences and master classes with some of the best musicians of our time.

David can teach you how to truly understand music and apply the concepts to the guitar fretboard, how to organize your playing, how to craft chord-solo tunes from any song, and just about anything else you would like to know.

No matter how old you are or where you are on your journey studying the guitar, you can surely benefit from the aid of a truly credible teacher.

Audition preparation

David has coached students for (successful) audition to some of the world's top programs of musical study.

David's students have gone on to tour the world as professional musicians, and have shared the stage with some of the top artists alive today.

"Living in rural Vermont has its set of challenges. When I began studying with David Newsam, I was driving an hour and a half each way to Dartmouth College for our lessons. During summers, winter breaks, and any other off-times, I would drive three hours each way to study with him in Manchester, NH. It was completely worth every penny in gas and every minute spent in the car.

There were some times, however, when traveling such distances to my lesson was impossible. To overcome this, we turned toward technology. I was able to study with David through Skype when I could not make those long drives. This gave me access to a world-class teacher and player right in my own home. Through these lessons I was able to effectively work with David on anything, including preparing for auditions, technique, improvisation, theory, songwriting, and more. Even though there was over a hundred miles between us during these online lessons, it felt like we were in the same room.

Because of my studies with David, I have been able to perform with some of the best musicians in the world of gypsy jazz, including Bireli Lagrene, Stochelo Rosenburg, Olli Soikkeli, Gonzalo Bergara, and others. I have found that online lessons are an extremely valuable way to overcome logistical barriers and to study with an incredible musician like David Newsam."

"David Newsam was my guitar teacher during my time at Berklee. David's unique use of the Socratic method to stimulate critical thought makes him stand out as one of the most illuminating educators I've met. I attribute a great deal of my growth as a guitar player to the time I spent studying with David. It's been almost 10 years since my first lesson, and I still find myself having a "Eureka" moment after dialing in for a Skype lesson.

It is David's methods of guiding students by listening and asking rather than by showing and telling that make him exceptionally well adapted to the Skype lesson format. Many teachers who are used to a more "hands-on" approach don't know how to handle the limitations of Skype. David is in his element, and I can say lessons with David via Skype did not seem any different than they did in person."

"David is one of the best teachers I've ever had. His Lessons are engaging and productive and he can communicate any concept in a very clear way. He is also an excellent Musician, and loves teaching. He really inspires you to give your best."

Eduardo Diaz

"I was a student of Dave's at University of New Hampshire for one year (2011-2012) and have been able to continue study with him thanks to online lessons. Most recently David has helped me to prepare for my graduate school auditions by introducing advanced concepts, arrangement ideas and new techniques. Dave has something to offer every student and this technology makes it possible, no matter how far the distance. Online lessons have proven to be a simple and unbelievably convenient process with the pros out weighing the cons by 'miles'."
